Intro

Greetings World.....

My name is Randall and I am a graduating senior at the University of Southern California where I am majoring in Business Administration with an emphaisis in Management and Operations.

I have a myriad of interests but the one that stands out for me in terms of how much time I dedicate to it would have to be music.I especially like soul, hip-hop, jazz blues, and guitar. I think my infatuation with music comes from the fact that I generally always have a song in my head regardless of whats going on. I took a guitar class last year which I did okay in but I really want to pick it up on much more serious level. Overall I believe my life runs to a beat and though the melody or tempo may change there is always generally a song that can play as the background to whatever is going on with me.

Some of my favorite music sites include: allhiphop.com, mtv.com/news, therapup.blogspot.com, and a host of others.

I've started this blog for my class to delve into the relationship between music and technology to see whether it is a productive or detrimental one. I believe that this a very pertinent issue because there are many purist who feel that technology has taken music away for its naturalistic roots. Be it the change in formats of listening to music (record to 8 track to tape to CD to mp3) or the lack of instrumentation in alot of todays most popular music. I will try be unbiased and post info advocating for both sides of the issue. I will return soon with my first real entry but take a look at the Zune vs. Ipod debate in the meanwhile.....

Ipod V. Zune

Hey Randall,

I never heard about the Zune till now. And based on what I've read I am inclined to say that maybe it is a better product than the ipod. But then again is it one of Microsoft's experiments? After all they do have a tendency to do these types of things. Create good product even though they it may not do so well in terms of profit (Xbox 360. The WiFi capability really coincides with what we've been talking about. It convergence across platforms. Seamless connectivity that is quickly becoming the standard. And I think that this is what relates exactly to the point you maid earlier. Many people may argue about the beneficial nature of technology when it comes to the artful experience that is music, but without it would as many people be able to listen to music? Or rather, the variety of music that some have become accustomed to. It's the question of richness versus reach. And going back to the issue of ipod versus zune: ipod is doing a great deal to protect its investment-take apple tv for example, but I don't know how effective it will be agains a player like microsoft that has already provided consumers with a fluid device in the zune. The only issue I have is the library. For now, the ipod is king and that's because of the wide array of music available. So it is important. Where will the zune's selection come from?
